I've tried TWICE at the 1701 K Street NW location in Washington, DC but the TSA people DID NOT SHOW UP!

TSA PreCheck is great except in airports that have "fake" PreCheck lines. These are lines that look like PreCheck, but do not have a dedicated scanner so you have to still remove your laptop and liquids/gels. An example would be the A and B gates at LAS. Come on, get a dedicated line!

Why isn't "precheck" the default level of screening for ALL passengers, and not just the wealthy, elite, and lucky?

Wouldn't the lines be shorter if you didn't waste everyone's time with a scientifically indefensible liquid ban, a pointless shoe carnival, and your slow, invasive, and ineffective naked body scanners?

Even if you have TSA PreCheck, you won't be able to use the shorter line if you're flying an airline that doesn't participate in the program, such as Spirit

Wow, you say that it isn't a "myth" that the TSA is doing a work slow down to push precheck. Well, of course. The slow down is to get more money out of Congress.

But here you are, pushing precheck as a way to save time traveling while the work slow down is in effect.

Well, there are several problems with the TSA's latest blitz on news websites and this blog.

1. Not enough precheck interview centers
2. Precheck interview centers are closed or moved
3. Precheck isn't available at many airports
4. Precheck lanes are arbitrarily closed at places it is allegedly available
5. Travelers who are "government approved" are not guaranteed precheck
6. Travelers experience the work slow down even in the precheck lane
7. Even when in the precheck lane, the traveler can be pushed into the regular lane

West, why haven't you responded to my requests on other comment sections for links to TSA communications (press releases, website posts, etc.) regarding recent TSA issues? You said you wouldn't comment on anything, but would provide links.

Well, Neffenger was hauled before Congress to explain the TSA work slow down. Kelly Hoggan was reassigned, after Neffenger said it was no problem for Hoggan to get $90,000 of bonuses in one year on top of his regular pay. The over-two-hour waits at Chicago's O'Hare miraculously disappeared when Neffenger showed up, then went back to awful again. And so on and so on and so on.

Where are the links you said you would provide?

Plus, over the past several blog posts, there have been questions from the American flying public that have not been answered.

Hey Bob, even though Neffenger "fixed" O'Hare, @AskTSA isn't confident in the fix. As of yesterday, @AskTSA is still telling passengers flying out of ORD to arrive two hours before flight to get through screening.

Or did you guys forget to update the contractor's scripts?

Bob, TSA is apparently claiming that they are enrolling 16,000 people a day. According to this analysis, that is impossible:

Last time I flew, the lines were so long that the screeners shut down the scanners and told people to leave their shoes on and walk through the metal detectors. Lines went away. Why don't you just do this on a permanent basis?

Just out of curiosity, if someone applied for precheck today, what's the earliest they might actually get the "benefits" of precheck?

This doesn't work if you're turned away from a Pre-check office (White Plains, NY) where walk-ins really aren't welcome, contrary to what your website says. Just drove an hour there and back. No appointments available until mid-July.

A million people can sign up tomorrow. The bottleneck is finishing the process. A website can easily surpport 16,000 applications a day.

If you applied today that would mean completing an application. Then you have to schedule an interview, then you have to wait for approval.

Best guess, from application to Trusted Travelers Number, 4 to 6 weeks. Longer if you can't schedule an appointment for the interview fairly soon.

Exactly why does TSA have enough people to operate all manner of social media sites but not enough people to screen travelers?

Is TSA using the people the public pays for correctly?

That's right! Pay $75 bucks and have yourself fingerprinted so you can help an incompetent agency NOT do its pointless job in the first place!

Thanks for the suggestion, Bobby and West! I'm also going to give $75 tips to garbage collectors who spill trash on the streets, DMV clerks who lose everybody's paperwork, commercial truck drivers who keep having accidents, and doctors who leave surgical instruments in patients. It's the same idea: pay bribes to people who are too incompetent and/or lazy to do their jobs, and hope that they'll stop screwing up at the job they're already paid to do.

Of course, that's assuming that they can stop screwing up. A doctor who lost 90% or more of his patients would likely wind up on the street, or in jail. The TSA, on the other hand...

It's funny. Even in this economy, the TSA can't scrape the bottom of the barrel hard enough to find hire a sufficient number over-empowered actors to engage in the most farcical form of security theater in the United States. And your solution to it is to ask people for MORE money to not watch their phoned-in performances? All in response to your agency's mismanagement and inability to plan for the "unexpected" traveler volume that happens EVERY SUMMER?

At least some people are starting to realize how the TSA's incompetence stretches all the way up to the top levels. How's your buddy Kelly doing these days? Not so good? What a shame.

@ Ronald G - the $85 fee has to be renewed every five years. For an additional $15, you could have Global Entry, which has actual value, if you travel internationally.

Either way, you will be FBI fingerprinted, and will have a background check done.

Not too long ago, TSA was looking into continuous monitoring of precheck member's social media.

16,000 people can start the process, but how many actually complete it and are government approved for travel?

West, what is the actual number for the past couple of weeks of newly government approved travelers through only the precheck program? When did they submit their applications? before the recent media blitz?

I'd love to see the stats of applications and approvals, both total numbers and length of time for processing. What links will you provide, West?

That's true, but when the TSA says 16,000 a day are enroling, that's not true and it's misleading. One isn't enrolled until one gets a KTN.

Fix the TSA, I believe TSA is in the process of developing ways to monitor all PreCheck members social media accounts; they have not given up on the idea.

We all know TSA likes to inflate numbers... Just look at the number of terror attacks in 2015, and how vehemently West defended the number. So they could get 2 signups and they would somehow find a way to inflate it to 16000.
