iPad Theft at JFK



TSA is working cooperatively with the Port Authority Police Department (PAPD) following the arrest of a TSA employee at JFK accused of stealing an iPad. The individual is being processed for removal from TSA.

What procedures is TSA management putting into place to ensure that these thefts do not continue unabated?

Why are TSOs not screened at the start and end of their shifts?

Until we get satisfactory answers, the only recourse is to assume that any TSO a traveler encounters is out to steal their property, and not ensure their safety.

Seems to me that thefts of this nature would be decreased and possibly prevented if your employees were universially screened whenever they entered and exited the checkpoints into the unsecure area of the airport.

Why don't you do that?

I'm a little confused. Is the employee going to be prosecuted, or just fired?

Seems like the normal thing to do in case of a theft would be to prosecute someone. Otherwise TSA is a great option for thieves: Steal till you get caught, and no real consequences.

I think the first question of this thread deserves an answer.

Why isn't TSA on the ball enough to prevent these ongoing theft issues. Some simple loss prevention procedures would go a long way in curing this problem.

Making sure that employees cannot take any contraband to the work area or remove any items would be a first step.

That means frisking all peoples who have access.

Wall Street Journal "Port Authority spokesman Steven Coleman said Wednesday that 32-year-old Sean Henry, of Brooklyn, was nabbed in a sting operation using decoy bags in cooperation with the TSA."

It looks like TSA is trying to weed out the scum. Good on them.

My wife used to work retail and had to open her bag for her boss before leaving for the night.

It's astounding that the TSA has no equivalent procedures.

Question number one does deserve an answer:

It seems to me that if the officers are working under surveillance, and dishonesty costs them their jobs and possibly their freedom, then thefts are hardly unabated.

Put things into perspective. Whereever you work, chances are someone is stealing something every day. These officers screen millions of passengers daily, and that means MILLIONS of honest transactions occur each day.

The fact that one or two a month dishonor their oath, and a thousand headlines are written about it, doesn't mean it is happening thousands of times, or that the majority of officers are dishonest.

So, TSA has been around for, what, almost a decade? And in all that time they've caught exactly zero terrorists. For them, scoring a "win" is finding someone with drugs (not actually part of their mission). And they've managed to engage in theft, sexual abuse, harassment, violation of basic constitutional rights.

This is an organization that literally has done NOTHING to benefit the human condition, and EVERYTHING to make travelers more afraid. TSA has been accomplishing the terrorists' mission for them. How often do we hear threats like "Do you want to fly today?" or "Do you want a pat-down?" meant to terrorize citizens? How often do you hear elderly Americans or foreigners who refuse to fly for FEAR of the TSA.

We're not afraid of terrorists. They're very, very, very rare, and their plots (underwear bomber) are usually very, very, very stupid.

What we are afraid of is the TSA. Afraid of them fondling our junk, stealing our stuff, violating our rights, slowing us up, etc.

The TSA is an evil organization and should be disbanded immediately.

Every TSA employee (they're not "officers," since they can't enforce the law--only execute TSA policy) should be searched, and patted down at the end of their shift.

What? You guys wouldn't like that? You don't like being treated like criminals and having your rights violated and being humiliated?

The TSA does not have the authority to “charge” anyone for anything. We are not law enforcement nor are we prosecutors, we are for the most part screeners.

As I understand it, after actually reading the article at the link provided (and elsewhere), that this individual is being charged with quite a few crimes. Firing the guy is about as bad a punishment as TSA can deal out, the rest is up to the local legal system. And yes, the TSA assisted in the “sting operation”(according to the news article) as one means of policing our own.

I think stings for theft are a great way to weed out bad folks. However, as someone pointed out, private sector runs into the same problem with theft. For example, just make a policy change of only clear bags for employees can help. A clear bag shows all the contents and makes it hard for people to sneak out with big ticket items. TSA should really get together with a private industry partner and go over their loss prevention policies. I understand the government is cutting expenses and tightening the belt, but there are cost effective ways to help prevent theft.

When you look at a screening site, they tend to be prepared so as to keep the property of the traveler of of view. The barked orders, sometimes at cross purpose, disorient and confuse the passengers. It is the perfect place to steal small items.

Criminal justice professionals tell me that out of eleven crimes committed, only 1 results in punishment. So putting that statistic to TSA criminality, there must be a lot of crime going on in TSA ranks.

And after all those "layers" and the "unpredictability" and the shoe-and-belt theater, and the crotch-grabbing, and the irrational bans... and the threat isn't the people you screen; it's you.

Just out of curiosity, will the TSA review previously submitted claims about items stolen from bags at JFK but which it had denied?

So it is confirmed: the TSA makes us less safe. Never caught a terrorist, but continuously finding "bad apples" among its staff.

Just like all passengers, do the TSO employees go through the scan machine as well,also just like in a retail store, why not issue all employees clear back packs,

How are the TSO checked for stolen property? Are tehy searched after shifts?

Good on the TSA for continuing these stings. People like this do not deserve to be a federal employee, they deserve to be in jail.

It was a sting, conducted by the JFK Port Authority Police, not TSA.

Once again TSA has been caught flat footed for not doing the most basic things to stop employee theft.

The simple answer is to have all TSA employees frisked before entering a work area and again when leaving. Forbid any personal items in work area. Forbid any items that can be used to carry items out of the area.

Loss prevention is not new, well perhaps it is for TSA.

It's really sad that this has to happen it only strengthens the public image of how bad the majority of it's officers are when indeed it's not. They have a huge portion of their ranks with college grads looking to get ahead, former teachers,cops,corrections,retired business owners and managers.It's so sad when one bad apple spoils the bunch ...

It would be salutary for TSA to give the same pat-down and search procedures that they inflict on the rest of us to their employees as they leave their shifts. Not only would this reduce the amount of thievery (which is unacceptably high), it would give these power-drunk, attitude-heavy people a taste of their own (nasty and offensive) medicine.

I would love if TSA implemented a sting operation in airports with the most thefts if not all airports and catch those that make TSA look bad because of their poor choices. Do not just fire them...PROSECUTE THEM AND PUT THEIR PHOTOS ON EVERY WEBSITE KNOWN...This would stop the thieves and make the other officers think before they fall into the same situation.

No- strip searches for TSA employees leaving work would be fine.

Every article I read indicates it was a joint operation between TSA and the Port Authority. To me that indicates that TSA cooperated beforehand, and in the aftermath.

I hope that we see more operations like this. These stings are an effective tool to curb illegal actions from all of the people that handle passenger bags, from intake to delivery at the end of the trip.

Why not just scan each and every TSA employee when they enter and leave the screening area, West?

TSA once again infringed on my Constitutional Right of Free Speech so I will post again and another letter to my elect eds, DHS OIG, and the Justice Department for these continued violations of my civil rights.

The article did state the sting was conducted with the cooperation of TSA. "was nabbed in a sting operation using decoy bags in cooperation with the TSA." That statement does not say it was a joint operation.

The more important issue is just why TSA will not take the most basic security steps to protect peoples property while in the hands of TSA and other airport workers. There is no reason to not believe that if someone can take something out of a bag they can just as easily put something in a bag.

TSA and all other airport employees should be treated no different than anyone else gaining admittance to the secure areas of an airport.

TSA security is focused solely on travelers when it is clear that the real threat is likely to be from the inside.

This "insider threat" issue isn't news to anyone in the security arena at all. Considering what TSA does is NOT security, it doesn't surprise me that they can't grasp this very basic security concept.
